FIJIANS have been reminded once again that their lifestyle choices are contributing to the rise of non- communicable-diseases (NCDs) in the country.

This was highlighted by the Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Alex O’Connor at official opening of the National Diabetes Foot Care Symposium 2018, which was held at the Holiday Inn in Suva today.

Asst Minister O’Connor said that the public’s help is needed to address the deadly disease and to change lifestyle habits.

“There are bad habits that affect our health, which includes excessive alcohol intake, tobacco and consuming too much processed food,” he said.

Asst Minister O’Connor added that consuming lots of sugar, oil and salt increases the risks of getting diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

“NCDs (non communicable diseases) affects the productivity level and affects the quality of one life,” he said.

“I am encouraging each of you here today, that it is vitally important for everyone to work together, to take responsibilities to address the issues of NCDs in Fiji.”
