From Awareness to Action: Diabetes Fiji in Vatukarasa
Diabetes remains a significant public health concern in Fiji, affecting people of all ages and placing an increasing burden on the healthcare system. In response to this challenge, Diabetes Fiji Inc. organized a community outreach program at Vatukarasa Village, within the Tikina of Taivugalei, on the 11th and 12th of August 2025. The program aimed to strengthen community-based diabetes management by training Village Health Workers in the proper use of glucometers, while also raising awareness on the importance of physical activity, nutrition, and overall healthy living.
Although the training was primarily designed for the three newly elected VHWs from Vatukarasa, Nameka, and Natuva villages, the program attracted strong interest from other women in the community, demonstrating a high level of engagement and enthusiasm. Alongside the training, basic health screenings were conducted for participants, including blood pressure checks, blood glucose testing, and Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments, providing immediate insights into personal health status. Participants were also guided on understanding and interpreting their capillary blood glucose (CBG) readings, enabling them to classify results as normal, borderline, or high—an important skill for early detection and timely intervention.
The outreach was facilitated by a multidisciplinary team consisting of a nurse, a dietitian, and a physiotherapist, who delivered tailored sessions to equip participants with practical knowledge in nutrition, exercise, foot care, and lifestyle management. The dietitian also observed the participants’ lunch preparation for the team, noting that they applied the healthy cooking practices highlighted during the nutrition awareness session. This demonstrated that the knowledge gained was being actively translated into daily practices, reinforcing the effectiveness of the program.
Diabetes Fiji extends sincere appreciation to the Zone Nurse at the Vatukarasa Nursing Station for her invaluable support and assistance during the outreach. Her dedication and cooperation were instrumental in ensuring the smooth implementation of the program.
The Vatukarasa Outreach successfully combined education, screening, and practical demonstration, fostering greater awareness of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) while empowering communities to take an active role in maintaining their health. Diabetes Fiji remains committed to continuing such initiatives, strengthening local capacity, and promoting sustainable health practices across Fiji.
